Ok, so you’re probably wondering why a restaurant is this week’s “Fun Weekend Ideas Friday” post. Usually restaurants go under the “Shameless Foodie” category and the “Fun Weekend Ideas Friday” category is reserved for fun stuff happening around LA. Well, in my opinion, La Sandia IS super fun – but more importantly, it will be closing down in March :(
I’m super picky about Mexican food and I love mom-and-pop restaurants the best. So the fact that La Sandia is closing to make way for YET ANOTHER Cheesecake Factory breaks my heart.
So before March, get your hungry self over to La Sandia at Santa Monica Place. You know the drill at this upscale mall – ample free parking for 90 minutes, super-cheap parking after 90 minutes. You’ll find La Sandia on the third floor “Dining Deck” next to Zengo and Sonoma Wine Garden.
I’ve been here a few times and have always been so impressed. First of all, the happy hour goes until late, so you can get cheap drinks and small plates. The margaritas are strong. The chips and salsa are fresh. The atmosphere is fun. The Mexican corn is TO DIE FOR.
But the best part, by far, is the enchiladas. As an expert enchilada maker myself (thanks Dad), I am very snobby at enchiladas. So when La Sandia enchiladas came out with GREEN SAUCE instead of the traditional red sauce, I was absolutely horrified. Begrudgingly, I gave them a try anyway. And I was blown away! The chile verde sauce is amazing – flavorful, kicky, but not overwhelming or gimmicky. It really spoke for itself. The cheese was fabulous and traditional – no cheddar to be found here. Black beans are served, no pinto or refried, and the rice has peas and carrots, like it should.
Next time you’re in the mood for great authentic Mexican food, step away from the Taco Bell and head to La Sandia instead – but you have to hurry.
