Whenever I have friends from out of town, visiting me, I take them to Penthouse at the Huntley Hotel. Right by the beach and Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, a 360 degree view of the ocean and the hills and a swanky hotel location, this top-floor bar is a tourist trap for sure.
You really can’t beat the views here, which is why I come here not infrequently. And they have a decent happy hour with good $6 wine, but sadly no good food. So it’s a good place to come after work to kick back with a drink and just watch the sun drop into the sea.
I have mixed feelings about it otherwise. The staff are soooo rude, it’s crazy. If you don’t hail a hostess (all 5 of them just stand at the hostess stand which is on the opposite side of the elevator) you will wait 40 minutes to be served as they look at you and then walk away. And if you do go up to the hostess stand and let them know you’re there and want a drink, they will treat you like you are crazy and tell you to just sit down anywhere and someone will serve you. Also, the hostesses and cocktail servers wear short tight black dresses with black knee-high boots, which is not classy whatsoever and makes them look like hookers. Sad, because they’re all really pretty otherwise.
All in all, the pictures below will help Penthouse speak for itself. Despite these frustrations, it still has one of the best views in all of Santa Monica and gorgeous decor, and I’ll never complain about a $6 glass of wine. Penthouse is great when you have visitors from out of town or out of state because it will impress them. It’s a great date-night spot, because the couches and candles force you to get cozy. It’s good for after-work relaxation. It’s great for daytime, to watch the ocean and beach-goers, and for evening, to watch the sun set. I’ve also heard they have a pretty good brunch – I need to try it out.
