I haven’t heard the old “black doesn’t match with brown” thing in quite some time, and for good reason. Black absolutely does go with brown – you just have to match the right shades and contrasts.
For my black and brown outfit, I started with this blouse from H&M. I love the geometric pattern on this blouse. But even more so, I love how the prominent black and white shapes are bordered by some shades of brown. That makes it easy for me to pair this blouse with a pleather brown skirt from Forever 21.
This skirt is one of my favorite items in my closet. It is so flattering. The pleather layer also boasts an inside liner, making it a really high-quality piece. The high-waisted fit is flattering, and the flared skirt shows off my legs. It’s also pretty professional, especially when paired with a ¾ sleeve button-down like this shirt.
Because the skirt is a little lighter shade of brown, I knew light brown shoes wouldn’t really compliment the black in the shirt. So I added these chocolate brown suede ankle booties from Fashion Rush Clothing. The little buckles are cute, and the stiletto heels are dressy.
To up the professional factor, I decided to style this outfit with a black and brown leather purse from Steve Madden. I generally only buy purses from Steve Madden, because they are high quality but at an affordable price. This purse is perfect for work because it’s structured and polished, but also holds a lot of stuff – throw in a laptop, tablet, planner and notebook and you’re good to go. It’s great for conferences!
Last but not least, I wanted to keep jewelry simple. This gold cuff ring is from Gorjana.
